Running your own business can be all consuming at times, and just now and again, there’s the sudden urge to get away from it all for the day and switch off. No emails, no calls. Just a day to yourself. The Highlands is a vast area, but a small population and not densely populated, and therefore sometimes you do have to travel a bit further than anticipated. No bad thing perhaps considering the beautiful scenery that you might be able to take in on the journey there.

As day trips go, we always favour heading west, perhaps with seafood in mind, but above all the serene views on route. From Beauly you head to Garve, taking in our nearest munro Wyvis, and the beautiful hills on Strathvaich estate, and then heading west towards Kinlochewe, passing through Strathconon to the south and Strathbran to the north. Head north west at Kinlochewe, and we might head for a pub lunch at the Badachro Inn. But if in need of some real R&R, we continue west and head straight to The Torridon Hotel, situated on the shores of Loch Torridon. Built as Bendamph Lodge in 1887, with beautiful views across the water to the imposing hills in the distance, there’s no better hotel dining room view that we know of within an hours reach of Beauly. A 5 star hotel, with a mouth watering menu, and a superb whisky bar, for whoever is not driving! Alternatively, as we did recently, perhaps a delicious afternoon tea of scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam before returning home to the dreaded reality………

Either way, the Torridon is a must visit for us both. Be it for the night, lunch or afternoon tea, it’s certainly one to tick off on your Highland must-do list.
