Campbells of Beauly knitwear items are knitted on either traditional knitting machines and seamed or on whole garment knitting machines. All knitwear made of natural fibres needs a degree of love and care when removing the item to prevent any damage, but it is especially important to take a little more care when removing an item that has been knitted on a whole garment machine.  These items are seamless, unlike traditionally manufactured knitwear which has seams,  and as a result they wear differently with one of the weaker parts of the jumper being at the underarm.

To prolong the life of your jumper we would ask that you consider how you remove the item after wearing. We suggest to pull the garment from the waist/ hips using both arms and pull off in one as removing one arm at a time or pulling the jumper from the back neck seam can often result in holes under the armhole or elsewhere.   Please see drawing below to show how best to remove your jumper.

Hand Wash

We recommend to our customers to follow the care instructions on the label inside your garment. For all knitwear this includes a 30 degree or 40 degree hand washing symbol. For best results handwashing, run a basin of water with (30 degrees – 40 degrees which feels cool-warm, ie not ice cold and not hot). Woollens can react to extremely cold water almost as badly as hot water. Add a capful of Woolly Wash and swirl around in the basin. Add your garment and gently squeeze the garment all over to push the Woolly Wash water through the fibres. Leave the garment to soak for 15 minutes and then repeat the squeezing process. Drain the soapy water and rinse the garment with water of a similar temperature, being careful not to add very hot or cold water. We recommend using a gentle spin on your machine to remove excess water. Lay your garment out and re-shape it back to its original shape, this can involve some gentle stretching of the arms or length. Lay the garment in a warm place on top of a towel and leave it to dry naturally. Do not place the garment on a radiator or in a tumble dryer.

Once the garment is dry we recommend a low temperature press with the iron and we suggest using a Cashmere Comb each time to remove any bobbles and smarten up the garment. Store your garment in a dust free and lavender scented drawer to prevent moth destruction.

Pilling

Soft and luxurious fibres such as superfine grade lambswool, cashmere and Shetland wool are shorter staple fibres that are gently twisted and spun into yarns in order to preserve their luxurious handle and light weight.

Pilling is a natural occurrence on a new knitted garment as the extraneous loose fibres in the twist are shed through first wear, as such, some degree of pilling can be expected in the initial stages of wear of your Campbell’s of Beauly garment. The gentle use of a cashmere comb for example will remove these excess “pilled” fibres and will settle once the garment is in use and excess fibres are shed. It is important to note that this phenomenon will not recur as regularly over time as this is the action of the loose fibres coming to the surface through initial use.

Pilling is not a sign of poor quality but simply an inevitable part of owning a product in a soft and light yarn which is woollen spun for softness and loftiness of handle.
